Kids bedroom ideas for small rooms

Make most of your space with a high sleeper bed...

When it comes to designing a child's bedroom, the sky really is the limit and every child's needs and desires can be catered for. In an ideal world, your child has plenty of space, limitless ideas and you have all the time and money to go with it. However in the real world, the design and budget of your child's room needs to be right for everyone. Never fear though, we have ideas for you and your little ones to inspire a space just for them. Meeting practical needs and soaring imaginations alike.

Themes can be great fun and inspire a whole host of ideas. Favourite characters can be found on bedding, wall paper, wall stickers, clocks, furniture and well anything really. But remember that a three you old obsessed with princesses and butterflies may change to loving dragons and knights before you can say 'redecorate?!' So unless your child has a long standing obsession then it may be better to go with a more general theme, such as nautical, jungle, animals or castles. That way you can easily adapt it if you want to and you will find a great range of accessories in whatever theme you choose.

If you need to stretch your budget then sanding down and repainting old furniture will give it a fresh and unique look. Don't be afraid to experiment and use bright colours or paint your own design. If it doesn't go as well as you'd hoped then you can always sand it down and start again. Most hardware shops will sell door nobs and painting stencils to go with any theme and for just a few pounds. It's also a great way to use up any old paint you might have lying around.

What you need will depend greatly on the age of your child. Turning your spare room into a nursery is incredibly exciting and fun. Thinking about what you will need and what you have space for is important. A cot of course but there are many different styles these days and cot beds, which convert to a toddler bed when needed are often a great idea. Changing tables are great for everyday use and storage but not essential if you don't have space. Nursing chairs are also great in the middle of the night for cuddles and feeds but again not essential. Creating a calm loving environment is important for you and your baby. Somewhere you will both feel relaxed and special. Mobiles, blackout curtains, warm colours and low lighting will help to create a nursery to enjoy and show off.

As children grow their needs change, cribs become cots and cots become beds. Toys mount up and storage becomes important. There are great and fun ways to store toys, clothes, books and whatever else you may have. Have a look around and see what you think will best fit in your child's room. Plastic boxes are a great idea, especially clear ones that will keep toys and clothes organised and you can see what's in them. You can get stackable ones or under bed ones to makes them even handier. Large toy boxes, soft toy hammocks that stick to the walls, colourful shelves, wardrobes and chests of drawers all come in different themes or can be customised. Cabin beds or high sleeper beds are a great idea for saving space. You can get these with desks and drawers underneath the sleeping space or a sofa or play tent. Some even have a ladder to go up and a slide to come down or a themed play tent over the bed.

Bunk beds are a great and fun idea if you have more than one child sharing a room. However, if they share a room but want their own space you can always divide the room with a shelving unit or decorate opposite ends of the room in different colours. Sofa beds or futons can also be a great idea if you child often has a friend to stay.

Whatever theme or style you choose it is important that you make it a safe space for your little one. Making sure plug sockets are covered, wires are out of the way and there are no pull strings on window blinds is all essential. However, you will probably need stair gates and possibly cupboard locks as well. These can all be brightened up and compliment your theme with a little effort and imagination though.

Whatever you and your child or children decide upon its important to create a fun and relaxing space. Somewhere your little one can be proud of and show off their individuality. So have fun, get them involved and look everywhere for inspiration.
